Hermanus Tour
Whales and Wine
HERMANUS FULL DAY TOUR
We’ll make our way along the N2 freeway passing the beautiful town of Somerset West, so popular with expats. Here we cross over the Hottentots Holland Mountain range via Sir Lowry’s Pass, a scenic route showing off the Peninsula below. We’ll continue through the lush green countryside into Elgin, renowned as the “Apple Kingdom” of South Africa. After stopping for coffee (and a bathroom stop) at a popular farm stall, we will descend to the coast. After parking we will casually stroll along the neatly maintained cliff path, savouring the “Champagne air” very likely seeing Southern Right Whales (June-Dec). We will then explore this beautiful, character-filled village on foot, browse the local market and boutiques, before settling down for a light lunch at the water’s edge.
After lunch we’ll take a drive by the local beaches, then head to Hemel en Aarde Valley to visit a few a few wineries. As the sun lowers in the sky we will stop for a panoramic photo stop. We’ll head back along scenic Clarence Drive, a stunning stretch of mountain pass with breath-taking views of the azure ocean below, passing through Kleinmond, Bettys bay, Pringle bay, Rooi Els, Gordons Bay and onto the N2 freeway and back home.
This road trip is one where the journey is as exciting as the final destination. Hermanus, the Riviera of the South with its mild Mediterranean climate is renown for its “champagne fresh air” and land-based whale watching (June-Dec, boat tour more certain of sightings). This beautiful coastline is littered with footpaths that offer solitude to passionate walkers or those that simply wish to escape the city to reset. We’ll seek whales from ashore, stroll through the quaint town with numerous fascinating stores, galleries, boutiques and numerous gourmet restaurants, some literally on the waters edge. The Hemel en Aarde valley boasts some world class wineries, two featuring in the ‘worlds top 100’. Finally we’ll head back home along scenic Clarence Drive, a stunning stretch of mountain pass with breath-taking views of the azure ocean below.
